Bevanne Bean-Mayberry Upperman
Bevanne Bean-Mayberry Upperman is the wife of Dr. Jeffrey Upperman for 29 years and mother of 3 young men whose lives are shaped by her Christian faith through Catholicism, support of public, private and Catholic education, and commitment to service. Dr. Bean-Mayberry is a Staff Physician and Core Investigator at the VA Greater Los Angeles (GLA) HSR&D Center for the Study of Healthcare Innovation, Implementation and Policy (CSHIIP) and Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. She has been the Site Lead of the VA GLA Women’s Health Practice Based Research Network (PBRN) for the past 10 years. Dr. Bean-Mayberry is a national leader in primary care quality and prevention by patient gender, women’s health clinic setting, or provider type. Her current interests include cardiovascular risk reduction among women Veterans, trauma informed care, and motivating women to take one step toward better health. Bevanne graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology, pursued a Masters in Population Dynamics at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene focusing on demography and reproductive health, and then studied medicine at UMDNJ – New Jersey Medical School. She trained in Internal Medicine at New Jersey Medical School – University Hospital before transitioning to VA Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh for her Advanced Fellowship in Women’s Health.
SERVICE: Dr. Bean-Mayberry has served in Los Angeles schools in varying capacities for over 15 years. Prior to her family coming to Loyola High School, she served on the boards of Los Angeles Unified School District’s Kester Elementary, Millikan Middle School Parent Teacher and Students Association and was a founding member of the Millikan Middle School Friends of Math Academy Parent Board. She also served as vice president for communications while also serving as liaison with the PTSA. During this time, she was also involved in fundraising for various programming activities. While supporting her son’s at Loyola High School, Bevanne joined and subsequently served on the Loyola Mother’s Guild Board (2015-2020). Other activities included active participation in support teams for the band, football team, prom, HSPT preparation and other liaison activities in the community. For six years, she coordinated Loyola Valley Table Mothers Community Service Project for Loyola High School.
Dr. Bean-Mayberry volunteers as alumna for Stanford University Office of Admissions and the Stanford National Black Alumni Association of Southern California. Her activities included volunteering at college fairs, joining Stanford Beyond the Farm Community Service projects and hosting two standing-room only free college-preparation talks at their home for underrepresented racial/ethnic students and public school students. Service in the Catholic Christian Community: Under the leadership of former LMG President, Mrs. Jane Hawley, she initiated a February speaking series at our Loyola High School Mother’s Guild General Meetings on Heart Health for Women to encourage mothers to exemplify heart healthy behaviors. With Valley mothers’ support, she expanded and coordinated the Loyola Valley community service day for Loyola boys who were approved by VA Greater Los Angeles Voluntary Services to revitalize the Veterans Garden at Sepulveda Nursing Home/Hospice. At Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, she supports the Health Ministry Team by promoting prevention activities at our parish such as flu shot campaigns, breast cancer prevention, and mental health care treatment.
Philanthropy: Dr. Bean-Mayberry and family support several non-profit organizations including Loyola High School, Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Stanford University and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
