Eight Loyola grads were on the field for Saturday’s USC vs. UCLA tilt at the Coliseum
Former Loyola All-CIF Southern Section, All-State, Serra League Most Valuable Lineman, and team Most Valuable Player CHRIS BROWN ’14 is USC’s starting offensive left guard. The 6-5, 310 lb.Cub alumnus likely will be jogging onto the field more than once for the Trojans after UCLA team captain and Lou Groza Award Finalist STEFAN FLINTOFT ’14 booms another of his expertly placed punts for the Bruins at the Coliseum on Saturday in the annual cross town rivalry game. The two were teammates at Loyola, but will be friendly foes on Saturday. Also seeing time for USC on Saturday will be Predator linebacker CHRISTIAN RECTOR ’15, who was All-Mission League and team MVP for the Cubs as a defensive end in 2014. Rector (6-4, 275) was a starter before he broke his hand three weeks ago. At he time of his injury he led the Pac-12 in sacks.Fullback REUBEN PETERS ’14 is a Trojan fullback, who earned All-Serra League accolades as a teammate of Brown and Flintoft on Loyola’s 2013 squad. USC freshman wide receiver JACK WEBSTER ’17 was a two-way star as a safety and receiver for the Cubs in 2016.Webster’s former classmates from Loyola’s 2016 team, linebacker WINSTON ANAWALT ’17, an All-Mission League linebacker, tight end CONNOR BEADLES ’17 and safety RYAN PARKS ’17 are members of UCLA’s squad.Cub alumni and fans are rooting for Flintoft to win the Lou Groza Award which is bestowed annualy on college football’s top punter. THOMAS WEBER ’05, Loyola’s All-CIF Division I punter in 2004, won the Lou Groza Award in 2007 while playing for Arizona State.A great Los Angeles Times story on Flintoft, whose cousin COLLIN FLINTOFT was the Cubs’ punter this season, appears in the link below. The feature mentioned that Flintoft and Washington’s center,Rimington Trophy Finalist COLEMAN SHELTON ’13, an All-Serra League lineman at Loyola in 2012, met for the coin toss when the Bruins played the Huskies in Seattle on October 28. That marked the first time that two former Cubs met for the pre-game coin toss at a Pac-12 contest as team captains and national collegiate football award (Lou Groza and Rinmington Trophy) finalists. There are 35 Loyola alums on the rosters of collegiate football teams this fall.
