In Memoriam – Fr. Philip J. Conneally, S.J. ‘31
The Loyola community is deeply saddened by the death of our beloved Fr. Phil Conneally, S.J., who died peacefully in the early hours of August 8th at Regis infirmary at Los Gatos. He was 94 years old and had experienced a bout of pneumonia. In 1917, at the age of 3, Phil first visited the Loyola campus when his parents drove him in a horse and buggy to watch the construction of Loyola Hall. Ten years later, he returned to the campus as a student where he witnessed the construction of Ruppert Hall. Phil graduated from Loyola in the spring of 1931 and immediately began studying at the Jesuit Noviate in Los Gatos. Fr. Conneally was ordained on June 17, 1944 and returned to Loyola in 1947 where he was a member of the Loyola Faculty for over 50 years. As a history teacher, he made Western Civilization come alive for generations of Loyola students. Over the years, Fr. Conneally also became Loyola’s “unofficial” historian: he wrote many short books about the history of the school. In 2002, Fr. Conneally was honored by Loyola High as one of the first recipients of the Cahalan Award. Even though Fr. Conneally retired to Los Gatos, he often traveled by bus to attend Loyola reunions and other school functions. He last visited the campus for the 1967 40th reunion in the spring of 2007. (We’re attaching a photo of Fr. Conneally at this reunion pictured with Joe Douglass’67, Tim Daze’67 and John Kruer ’67). He was never happier than when he was surrounded by his former students. Fr. Conneally was remembered by his students from ’67 for “carrying his lecture notes on chalkboards with him from class to class”, and “his endearing way of addressing students (“young Conkey…)” as being “one of a kind”, “a cool guy” who had a “phenomenal knowledge of books” and “loved history”. His sense of humor and ready smile, his passion for teaching and devotion to his students, and his gentle, kind nature will long be remembered. Phil will be greatly missed by everyone at Loyola who was touched by his unique spirit. May he rest in peace. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30a.m. on Thursday, August 14th in the chapel of the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, CA. The burial will follow immediately at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. Loyola High will also host a memorial service when we reconvene for the fall semester, and we’ll let you know when we’ve scheduled a date for the service.
