Science Department

Our Mission

The aim of Loyola High School’s Science Department is for all of our students to acquire the knowledge and skills of empirical inquiry so that they may better understand and live responsibly in the world God creates.

Inquiry Supported by Technology

Our department has built a curriculum around using data collection technology tools, such as probeware sensors, digital microscopes, weather station, and seismograph, for the purpose of advancing students' scientific inquiries. We use technology to suppor our vision of fostering deep levels of inquiry with our students--an environment where students play a significant role in asking questions and defining problems, locating data, manipulating data, and ultimately solving problems. Technology at Loyola will be used to help students understand the true Nature of Science--that is they will learn through experience that scientific knowledge

  • is tentative (subject to change),
  • is empirically based (based on observations of the natural world),
  • is partly the product of human inference, imagination, and creativity (involves the invention of explanation),
  • is socially and culturally embedded,
  • and necessarily involves a combination of observation and inferences.
