President Gregory Goethals, SJ, Class of '73
Fr. Goethals has maintained a long association with Loyola High School. An alumnus of the Class of 1973, he followed in the footsteps of his late father, Richard B. Goethals, Class of 1941. His three brothers, his brother-in-law and other members of the extended Goethals family also attended Loyola. A member of the school’s Board of Trustees for the past five years, Fr. Goethals returned to Loyola in September 2005 as superior of the Jesuit Community and director of the Adult Spiritual Formation program. Before returning to Loyola, Fr. Goethals was at Saint Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco, where he served in various capacities since 1994. Prior to joining Saint Ignatius, he worked at Brophy Prep in Phoenix and, while earning a master’s degree in Counseling at the University of San Francisco, worked with the Shanti Project for AIDS services and the AIDS Health Project of the University of California, San Francisco. A 1977 graduate of Santa Clara University, Fr. Goethals completed one year of study at Loyola Law School before entering the Novitiate. As a Jesuit, he studied philosophy for two years at Fordham University in New York, and later received a master’s of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, a master’s of Theology at Western Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., and a master’s in Counseling from the University of San Francisco. He was ordained in 1988.
